Breakfast with Sophia
by Kim Walters
Sophia wants the spoon.
Not the oatmeal,
warm and sticky,
substantial and infinitely squishy.
Not the oatmeal,
though her Mama says "eat."
Sophia wants the spoon.
Shine of silver,
dancing light reflected,
cool and slick and smooth.
Simply the spoon will do.
She samples and explores
its amazing potential
and smiles a sweetness
fine enough to chase the bitterness
from every cup of coffee
for every morning
for the rest of my life
with or without the oatmeal.
